Field Notes

Description:

A large fly that that is believed to be a mimic of the Southern Yelowjacket Wasp. But the give-aways are: very short antenna, only 1 pair of wings, lack of a narrow waist. Also, lighter in colour. About 2 cm in size.

Habitat:

Found in Eastern North America -- southern Canada & States. All the way south to Texas, east to the coast.

Notes:

Great at hovering. Buzzes loudly, but completely harmless, unlike their look-alike wasps & hornets.

thanks for the id! and we were all scared of this guy, thinking he's aggressive & angry.
They are quite loud, but they are all bark and no bite.
