Field Notes

Description:

This species with a dark orange patch on the hind wings was not as common as the Erodyle Checkerspot Butterfly, but was about the same size. On the upper side, the hind wing patch is dark orange, but on the underside (third picture) the hind wing patch is yellow. When it's wings are closed, it looks like the Erodyle Checkerspot and to make it more difficult, the two species hang out together, puddling on the gravel by the highway. Habitat:

Along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.
