Water plants growing along edge of St. Johns River.

That is awesome. I put my suggestion back up for the link (my bad). Maybe it was a Snail Kite. The females and males actually look different which is called sexual dimorphism. They do feed on apple snails, but unfortunately some non-native apple snail species out compete the native snails which may cause a problem for the Snail Kite. Either way I am glad to see these eggs as a spotting! You have a good eye. :)

Thank you for helping pinpoint the ID. I was just reading about the Snail Kite. I'm not familiar with them, so I can't say for sure that I saw any, though I did see a number of very dark birds that fit the description. What I did see were apple snail eggs in a number of places. I didn't know what they belonged to, but they stood out and caught my attention.

Yay! I'm so glad you found Florida Apple Snail Eggs. These are the only native apple snail species in Florida. A tasty delight for Snail Kites. ;)
