Field Notes

Description:

The elegant stinkhorn is a type of mushroom. The color is generally red to pink, the rounded body can range from 4 to 7 inches tall, and anywhere from 5/8 to 1 inch across. The tips of the elegant stinkhorns are covered by a greenish-brown slime while young.

Habitat:

You can find this elegant stinkhorn during the months of July through September. They grow on old wood, dead leaves, or rich soil. This explains why I found it in our mulch beds which are composed of wood chips and dead leaves tend to fall here.
