Field Notes

Description:

These are three young osprey who are almost adults but still whiny enough to get food from their parents! The mother and father were soaring around in the distance getting food for these not-so-young-ones. Earlier this summer, on July 5, 2013, there was a terrible thunderstorm which hit Wolfe's Neck State Park badly. The next day, while clearing out fallen trees, one five-week-old osprey chick was found on the ground, as it had fallen from the nest. It was cared for overnight, as the other two osprey chicks weren't found and a search ensued the following day. Both were found, just as healthy and alive as the first one. Amazingly, though they could not fly, they were not injured and were placed back in the nest, along with a nesting platform to avoid replication of this event. You can read more about this story in the link to the right of my spotting.

Habitat:

Found nesting on the coast of Maine at Wolfe's Neck State Park. They were on Googin's Island, an island especially reserved for them, and were nesting on a White Pine (Pinus strobus).

Notes:

Lifer! I took a video of them, but it seemed to be the only time they decided to be quiet. Photos two through four are I think the parents. Photo three shows the osprey flying after diving in the water.
