Field Notes

Description:

15-20 mm in size. Unexpectedly good at flying. Gold-shimmering back and larger hindlimbs with a few spikes.

Habitat:

Urban park. The bug was found on an Bougainvillea. It flew away, but came back to the exact same branch a few minutes later.

Notes:

Time to learn about a new family, and perhaps even species. But in order to do that, I do hope to get some ID support :)

There are several on-line records for this species from southern Africa, including spottings on PN. In a situation where no common name is known it is probably better to use the group name, in this case "broad-headed bug" rather than duplicate the scientific name there...See http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17253708

This looks like a broad-headed bug (Alydidae) which are very similar to the leaf-footed bugs (Coreidae).

I highly doubt it's a beetle! It looks like a shield bug..:)
