Field Notes

Description:

<0.5 cm copper and black barred taking off from plant leaf surface

Habitat:

These tiny flies are every where on top of intensely sun drenched leaves.
They are on Boneset and JoePyeWeed and Buddleia plants.

Notes:

They seem to be constantly hopping around, I call them "leaf top copper hopper flies".They are very abundant throughout July on the hottests days. They are more common on garden plants and less often spotted in the wildflower meadow.I remember seeing these in great abundance when I visited the Broooklyn Botanical garden on plants along very developed sidewalks. I have spotted different color varieties: bronze and metallic green. Third picture added 23SEPT2013.
