Black Swan
Cygnus atratus
-37.8142, 144.963
Field Notes
Description:
Large, black waterbird with elegant long neck and red bill. Better tempered than the internationally famous white, mute swan - unless you threaten/get too close to the family. Then the male will slowly but surely get you to move on.
Habitat:
Usually freshwater or brackish wetlands. This specimen and his mate was found in a highly developed area of water in Port Phillip Bay, the Docklands.
Notes:
This specimen is probably a male (cob) due to its larger size, deeper black feathers, brighter red bill, and confident manner. A smaller nearby solitary swan on a nest may be his mate (pen).
Docklands East.
