Field Notes

Description:

A very small dragonfly, reaching a total length of no more than 25 mm. The males have orange or amber wings. Both genders have a red pterostigma.

Habitat:

City maintained retention pond.

Notes:

This species is quite small, much smaller than the skimmers (note how short the abdomen is relative to the very broad wings). This makes the shape of this species quite different from almost all other dragonflies. Also note that the entire wing is orange, except for the reddish markings on the leading edges.
