Field Notes

Description:

Found these on the beach on the same day. They were all scattered along the beach however
The first four photos is the same thing, just at different angles
the measurements are
Length; 20 cm
Width from widest point 9 1/2 cm
Height; 12 cm
im really curious as to what you guys think it is :P I have no idea whatsoever
the fourth and fith are vertebrae and I think its a relatively large fin- about 19 1/2 cm?
I need help guys! Im so curious its nearly killing me! Please help!

Alright, I did a little more research and I believe that first bone (First 4 pictures) is part of the neurocranium of a fish, As to what species, I can't venture a guess but it was a pretty big fish! A colleague of mind mentioned possibly a skull of a Batfish (Platax sp.) another colleague thought Greater Amberjack. If you google batfish skull, dang it looks a lot like what you have there! Very cool find!

Wow, thanks for the description! I am totally shocked that the 1st 4 pics are the same bone!!! Each picture makes the bone look SO different! The measurements also help! Let me do a little more research and get back to you! At first glance I believe what you have are fish bones... that's a big fish! That first bone is also a vertebrae...I think... or perhaps the sacral region... I'll be back!
