Field Notes

Description:

The Green Heron is the smallest of the herons at 16-18 inches. It has a chestnut neck that it pulls back into its body. The neck has a white stripe down the middle and contrasts with a greenish-black head cap. The back and wings have a green sheen and the under parts are gray. Its legs and feet are bright yellow; the beak is long and sharp and is black on the top and yellow on the bottom. It also has yellow eyes which can face forward to help it judge distances. The female looks like the male but is smaller and duller. The juvenile is also duller than the male, but its head, sides, and under parts are heavily streaked with brown and white. It has a tan speckled back and wings.

Habitat:

City maintained retention pond.
