Field Notes

Description:

A black and white tufted caterpillar. There are more tufts on it's head and two tufts on it's back end. Some orange striping down it's sides.

Habitat:

Found in most of North America. The caterpillar eats the leaves of Elm, Maple, Birch, Willow & Oak trees.

Notes:

I found this caterpillar on the underside of an Alder leaf. He was very interesting, so I took a few photos. at first I thought the more tufted end was his back end, but on closer inspection I realized it was his head.
