Field Notes
Description:
Males have orange on the ends of their antennae, the females are darker than the males. Upperside of wings is an orange-brown with black borders.
Wingspan: 1 1/4 - 1 7/8 inches (3.2 - 4.8 cm)
Habitat:
This butterfly lives in moist, rocky areas, such as wooded streams and marshes. Adults eat dogbane, fleabane and white clover nectar.
Notes:
I was out taking photos in the marsh when I noticed this little butterfly sitting on a leaf beside the trail. He kept his front wings fully open for me to get a good picture and seemed content to just sit there unconcerned about my presence. Very interesting and beautiful patterns on the wings.
