Field Notes

Description:

This spider is sometimes called the "Variable Decoy Spider". Some spiders are not too difficult to identify as belonging to the Genus Cyclosa. The spider shown here has the characteristic tubercles on both sides of its "tail" which is a well known feature of Cyclosa. However, when it comes to identifying the species, it becomes slightly harder, due to the fact that there are so many pictures published online, claiming to be Cyclosa insulana, many of which look very different from each other. I have called my spider Cyclosa sp (poss. insulana) because there are several photos on inaturalist.org (labelled C. insulana) which match my photos, but for the aforementioned reasons, I don't feel 100% certain of this identification. I would appreciate any advice on this.

Habitat:

This spider was spotted in our backyard, this afternoon.

Notes:

It looks like this spider is just starting to collect some trash for its web decoration. So, I have placed only two photos in my spotting as I intend to keep an eye on the web, over the coming days, with the intention of adding more pictures to show how the decoration develops. At least, that is my plan, but you know what they say - "The best laid plans of mice and men...."
