Papery skin - some species of puffball?

Habitat:

Old growth forest - Doug fir, cedar, thick undergrowth (ferns, huckleberry, devil's club), many nurse logs.

Stump Puffball

Lycoperdon pyriforme

In the UK at least, the stump puffball, Lycoperdon pyriforme, is the only species of puffball that grows on wood according to the British Mycological Society website
