Field Notes

Description:

Appearance differs geographically. A red/orange brown with black spots and a narrow or missing submarginal band on the hind-wing. (Noticeably narrower that the band on the Great Spangled Fritillary).

Wingspan of 2 1/2 - 3 1/4 inches (6.3 - 8.3 cm)
Butterflies eat nectar from flowers.

Habitat:

This butterfly typically lives in moist prairies, high mountain meadows, openings in barrens, brushland, dry fields, open oak woods and bogs.

Notes:

This butterfly was very bold and even let me hold it on my finger for a bit. It wasn't too concerned that I was there taking pictures. There were actually two of them flying around, at times fighting over the same thistle flower.
