Field Notes

Description:

large butterfly, about 3"

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2400m

Notes:

This butterfly kept flying around a sunny clearing in a trail at Santuario Otun Quimbaya. It wouldn't land often and when it did it was always out of reach. These were the best shots I could get.

Again with the same location! Thanks bayucca. I'm surprised this is a type of clearwing. It looks much better in the link photos up close. I'm not much of a wine drinker but the name does sound eloquent.
Nymphalidae, Danainae, Ithomiini, Elzunia humboldt bomplandii. From the same area like yours. Close your eyes and speak the name loudly: Elzunia humboldt bomplandii. How does that sound?? Like a glass of wonderful, tasty and old Bordeaux wine ;-)...
