36.6153, -118.11
Field Notes
Description:
The queen bees of this species (bombus nevadensis), have bright yellow hair and are much larger than the workers and males. Near John Muir Wilderness in a meadow of blooming thistles and lupine, 2009. Here is a forest service article about identifying bumble bees of the western US. http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/documents/BumbleBeeGuideWe… (I would have listed this in the reference section but the site was being obstinate at the time.)
Habitat:
High elevation meadow in the Sierra Nevada mountains above Owen's Valley in eastern California.
Notes:
I was loading this photo onto my photography site and didn't know that this was a queen bee until doing a little research and finding the forest service article.
