Field Notes

Description:

A small spider about 6mm long ( excl.legs) with a banded brown and white pattern on legs. The cephalothorax was brown with white setae. The abdomen had wavy dark brown and white patterns.

Habitat:

Spotted in a depression on the trunk of a spotted gum ( Eucalyptus maculata)

Notes:

I could not get enough details of this spider to be absolutely confident about the ID. I hope to receive confirmation.
This orb weaver (if correctly identified) is seen mostly in Queensland but has been recorded in Victoria and Tasmania.
Interestingly, the dimpled trunk of the spotted gum offers shelter to several species on insects. I have seen small cockroach egg cases, pupae of ladybirds, eggs of ladybird and now, an orb weaver - probably guarding her eggs !. They seem to like to use the depressions on the trunk.
