I'm thinking this might be basswood because of the base of the leave not being directly across. It's a relative small tree, but not a shrub. Alternate leaves and lenticular marks on the bark. Have to research a little more... Thanks, chesterbperry!
Tough to say from these photos alone, possibly something in birch family. Do you have more photos, was it a tree or shrub, what kind of habitat?
