Field Notes

Description:

large terrestrial orchid

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2400m, found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia at elevations of 800 to 1600 meters or higher

Notes:

This orchid was a huge surprise. I was wandering on the road near the accommodation at Santuario Otun Quimbaya. It was late afternoon and it looked like it might rain, so I stayed close and took a few trails into the forest that kind of petered out into nothing. Amazingly just off the road on one of these trails I found this spectacular orchid. One of the nicest terrestrials I've ever seen. Definitely my spotting of the day!
