Field Notes

Habitat:

This species is found in many different habitats including tropical rainforest, cloudforest, humid deciduous forest, orchards and suburban zones at altitudes between sea level and about 1400m.

Notes:

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to sort out these cattlehearts. It was the first day I arrived and the garden was full of these butterflies, and I just took the camera and shot at random! No discipline!! Bad Girl!
There were 2 types. One with a green spot which was slightly larger than one that had a white spot and on which the red seemed more prominent. But I can't match up the closed wing shots any more.
Any help would be appreciated.

Species ID Suggestions

True Cattleheart

Parides eurimedes mylotes

Comments (3)

Parides eurimedes mylotes for #1 and #5. #2 to #4 are different! I notice now that these are really tricky ones and I suggest that you make separate spotting of each of them. Looking at some details, they might all be a different species. And I think it is easier to have the same species twice as switching all the time and you might put together all shots of the same spotting later.
So 1 is probably the closed wing view of the Emerald-patched Cattleheart, Parides sesostris, by the looks of the photo in Wiki. I'll put it with the E-P Cattleheart.
#2, #3 and #5 looks like being the same. #1 is different and #4 is different.
