Field Notes

Description:

Body about 1/2 inch long.

Habitat:

Spotted on the edge of a path through a wooded area.

Notes:

This spider built a beautiful 2.5 ft. diameter web. I found it hiding itself in a little shelter of 3 leaves it had attached together.

Thanks for the kind words Jemma. I almost walked right through its web actually. The path I was on is about 6 ft. wide. The sun hit a support thread stretching across the path. I followed it to to the web and looked for the spider. I found it nestled in a three leaf abode it had meshed together. I carefully separated 2 of the leaves to get a better look and some images. Kinda felt bad about damaging it's house though. If you look closely at the edge of the leaf on the left side of the pic you can see the remnants of the silk that was holding them together. The most amazing thin though was that the orb weave itself was next to a bush that it housed itself in. There was a single strand of silk stretched across 6 ft. of open ground at about 4 ft. high. It's an amazing feat of engineering. I checked on it today and it repaired the damage I had done to its abode. :)
