Description:
The Common cottongrass is a sedge found all around Iceland in marsh areas. A resembling species found in Iceland is E. scheuchzeri, Scheuchzer's cottongrass. The common cottongrass has multiple spikes on each flowering stem, whereas Scheuchzer's cottongrass has only one spike per flowering stem.
Habitat:
Moorland on mountainside, near the coast. At Lónsöræfi, a wilderness area in south-east Iceland.
Notes:
Sedges superficially resemble grasses or rushes. In cotton grasses, after fertilization in early summer, flowers develop distinctive white bristle-like seed-heads that resembling tufts of cotton.
