Field Notes

Habitat:

Found in field of grass and wildflowers between hills of deciduous forest.

Notes:

Spotted at Whitewater State Park. Trailed after butterfly for awhile. When it did land it when down in the brush and was difficult to photograph. Identification reference: Butterflies of the North Woods by Larry Weber.

Hi Tamarac, what it looks like you have here is a female Eastern Black Swallowtail, at least in images 1 and 3. Image 2 is a different butterfly. It may be the same species but the markings are a bit different. It's hard to tell. Red-spotted Purples are similarly colored but they lack tails, which your butterflies clearly have, and the color pattern is different. Hope this helps!
