Antheraea polyphemus
49.7835, -92.8336
Field Notes
Description:
Bright green caterpillar with tiny orange/yellow bumps on it's sides. Small white hairs growing out of the bumps. Brown face and front legs and a purple "v" shape on it's back end.
This particular caterpillar was approx. 21/2 inches long and 1/2 an inch wide.
Habitat:
Lives in deciduous hardwood forests, wetlands/marshes, urban areas and orchards. The caterpillar eats the leaves of various trees, including: oak, maple, birch, and willow.
Notes:
I found this caterpillar crawling slowly across the trail in our local marsh. His bright green colour caught my eye. He was one of the largest caterpillars I had seen. I spent some time photographing him before returning him to a safe place in the marsh.
