Field Notes

Description:

Found this cocoon in my living room under a small flower on the table. It's less than a cm. On the flower there was a Biston betularia larva so at first I thought that it must be the larva then while searching on google didn't find anything similar to this from Biston betularia species. So I don't know which species it could be.

That's fine I knew you meant cocoon and not larva since this can never be a larva :)
I must correct my previous comment. This is a pupa (cocoon) not a larva (larvae is the grub and would have been inside the host caterpillar). The larva duration is longer and will be the same as the caterpillar lifespan. Bugguide link will show an image of the outcome that I anticipate. I look forward to your result.
Oh perfect then I will be keeping it in a jar and see what comes out. Thank you for the help!
I think it will emerge i less than one week.
Thank you martinl. That's an amazing information. How long does it take for the wasp to enclose?
I suggest the larva of a wasp. It is possible that your unfortunate peppered moth caterpillar was infested http://www.flickr.com/photos/pcoin/7063423481/ http://bugguide.net/node/view/21674 Why don't you put it in a jar and let us know if a wasp emerges?
