Field Notes

Description:

The bean goose migrates from the high Artic to the subtropical zones. I found this goose and her babies roaming around on a sidewalk in Florida. This type of species breeds in pairs with their nest disperse or in light groups. Interesting enough, when the bird breads, it becomes flightless for one month between July and August. In September, the species leaves the breading grounds. I must have been near open water, because this species places nest near 2 km of open water.

Habitat:

In the high Artic tundra the bean goose breads near lakes, pools, rivers, and streams. A preference for the Taiga nesting population is in scrubby birch Betula spp. forest. In the winter, this species passes through marshes, agricultural land, and damp steppe grassland.
