Field Notes

Description:

I found this moth (it's about 7 cm) on house's wall, attracted by the light.
Sfingide of significant size, has a wingspan of 8-12 cm and a proboscis long, up to 10 cm. The wings and chest have a brown-gray, with decorative bands, the abdomen shows a pigmented with black stripes and pink spots. A rest can be mistaken for a piece of wood as the wings hiding abdomen colored.

Habitat:

It appears between May and July. The adults flicker in the fall and then it seems that they migrate south. Migratory species that regularly reaches Northern Europe. It feeds soaring, due to its size can be identified easily at dusk.

Notes:

In tropical areas the caterpillar was harmful to batata.
