Field Notes

Description:

White asphodel grows to a height of 50–120 centimetres. The plain stem is supported by thick fleshy rhizomes. The leaves, which originate from the base of the stem, are gutter-shaped and covered by a waxy coating (glaucous), 50–70 centimetres long. The white hermaphroditic flowers are funnel-shaped, 4 centimetres of diameter, with six elongated white petals. The flowering period extends from April through June. The egg-shaped yellow-green seed capsules are usually 8–10 millimetres in length.

Habitat:

Holm oak forest

Notes:

The roots were eaten in the old times in a similar way as leek. Nowadays it is not eaten because the raw roots contain a toxic called asphodeline.
