Field Notes

Description:

A wild hive of European Honey Bees, in a hollowed-out Long Leaf Pine. The hive was about 15 feet up, at the top of a long crack in the trunk.

Habitat:

Oak hammock, Silver River State Park, on the Sinkhole Trail.

Notes:

I first noticed the crack in the tree, and was looking for signs of a possible lightning strike, when I heard a soft but definite buzzing. As I followed the crack upward, I spotted the bees! Needless to say, I kept my distance.
