Field Notes

Description:

The female has more patterning, but her markings are more brown than the black markings of the male. Both males and females have a white hindwing. Female has yellow/tan markings on underside of hindwing.
Wingspan: 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 inches (3.8 - 6.3 cm)

Habitat:

This butterfly inhabits a wide variety of areas, including: dry weedy areas, vacant lots, fields, pastures, sandy areas, railroad beds, and roads.

Notes:

I observed this butterfly flying around Aster flowers by the side of the creek. It moved around a lot, but allowed me to get a couple nice photos before flying off.
