Description:
Iris versicolor is a species of Iris that is Native to North America. It is known by a variety of names, including: Blue Flag, Harlequin Blue Flag, Larger Blue Flag, Northern Blue Flag, Blue Wild Iris, American fleur-de-lis, and Water Flag. It is North America's most widespread native Iris.
Blue Flag is a perennial plant that grows anywhere from 60-90 cm (23.5-35.5 in.) tall. The flowers bloom from May to early July with seeds produced in autumn. The flowers attract pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies, and will also attract hummingbirds that come to feed on the nectar.
The Blue Flag Iris is the provincial flower of Quebec.
Habitat:
The Blue Flag typically grows in more moist/wet areas. It is commonly observed in wet forests, sedge meadows, marshes, and along streams, ponds and lake shores. It prefers sun with partial shade and wet/very moist soil.
Notes:
There were quite a number of these beautiful flowers in the local marsh this summer. I was glad to be able to get some good photos. These flowers are very eye-catching and easily one of my favourite wildflowers.
