Field Notes

Description:

This small golden brown frog was cutely peeping out from a hole in a tree.

Habitat:

Mountain alpine forest, 3100+ ft.

Notes:

I was photographing something else, when I noticed a pair of eyes looking at me. I did a double take and realized this little guy was hiding in a tree hole.

This is just the regular American Toad, not the Hudson Bay subspecies. And the Genus for toads in North America is no longer Bufo, got changed back in 2009. North American toads are now in several different Genera, and the American Toad is Anaxyrus americanus.

Yes, I have heard of that toad too. I'm not sure we get it this far north. Maybe if you can find a site that deals primarily with frogs and toads you could send them your photos and any additional information. Because the entire toad is not visible, it might be difficult to identify, but you never know. :)

Thank you, eelhsamarie. I'm wondering if someone can possibly help me with subspecies identification... In the region, there's B. a. copei, the rare Hudson valley toad. If this was it, it'd totally make my day!
