Field Notes

Description:

This clump of saw palmettos has recently recovered from a prescribed burn, as evidenced by the blackened prostrate trunk.

Saw palmettos are amazing plants. They are named for the sharp saw-toothed ridges along both sides of the leaf stalk. It can give a very nasty deep gash if you aren't careful!

Habitat:

This clump is growing in the Silver River State Park, Ocala, Florida. Along the Sinkhole Trail.

Notes:

I am always oddly inspired when I see the juxtaposition of new living vibrant green emerging from blackened, charred trunks and stumps.

Ain't Florida amazing? :)
