Two-Lined Spittlebug
Prosapia bicincta
33.9727, -83.5745
Field Notes
Description:
Adults of the superfamily Cercopoidea are also called Froghoppers. The name Spittlebug is more commonly used for the nymphs. Nymphs create a frothy covering of plant sap around themselves, to give shelter and moisture. It looks just like spit, hence the name.
Habitat:
Found on a pampas grass plant in my yard, where there were many other spittlebugs of the same species.
Notes:
Most of the spittlebugs had little drops of liquid near them. I thought they seemed to be excreting/secreting them (usually near their rear ends), but some may also just have been drinking from water droplets (when they were facing that direction!). Does anyone know what they were doing? Anything more significant than just drinking and peeing?
