Description:
Crested Guineafowl has a total length of approximately 50 cm. he plumage is overall blackish with dense white spots. It has a distinctive black crest on the top of its head, the form of which varies from small curly feathers to down depending upon subspecies, and which easily separates it from all other species of guineafowl, except the Plumed Guineafowl. Guttera pucherani edouardi are one of five recognized subspecies (Wikipedia). The bird belong to the family Numididae (Guineafowl)
Habitat:
Found on a gravel road during the end of the dry season. The grass on the sides of the road is about 30-50 cm high and densely growing.
Notes:
Guineas can be raised to roam free or in confinement, whichever the owner prefers. Allowing them to roam provides more protection for the yard. However, this can entice other animals to capture the birds, resulting in loss. A compromise would be to allow them to roam during the day and be housed at night. Because Guinea fowl are excellent foragers, roaming during the day is economical because they will find most of their own food. A simple structure such as a chicken coop is adequate to provide housing and they can live with chickens, also. Guineas left to roam at night will make their beds in trees.
