Field Notes

Description:

The one time I can tell which empidonax flycatcher I am watching is when he puts his head back and sings, which this one did! Love that! Note the orange colour on the bottom mandible and the yellowish tinge to the lower breast. He was singing Fitz-pew! or close to that. Photos 2 & 3 show the slight wing bars and touch of light around the eyes.

Habitat:

Marshy grassy area at the Blue Heron Reserve with trees to perch on from which to sail out and grab flying insects. This one used the same perch for multiple forays, which is typical of empidonax flycatchers.

Notes:

The Willow Flycatcher has just arrived in this area a couple weeks ago and is a common breeder here.
