Description:

This is an specimen of Colias croceus with opened wings. In the wild I have always found them either flying very fast or sitting with their wings closed. Unfortunately the only way I had an opportunity to photograph one with wings opened was in this spotting where the poor butterfly had been run over by a car and was dying.
It seems to be a male, given the description in Wikipedia.
For more info in the species you can visit my other recent spottings, some of them in the same area.

Habitat:

Weerribben-Wieden

I guess they are in many more places in Europe, also in Spain. See this spotting from Eulalia for example: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17312142
Thanks, Dan et al.! These can be seen in Belgium and Holland in the summer months (in some nearby countries as well). Usually they land with their wings closed and they fly really fast so the only way I could show the inner part that is also so pretty was when I found this dying specimen. For the usual wings closed shot you can see this other spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/37279065
Wow! One of the nicest colored sulphur butterflies I've seen.
