Field Notes
Description:
Meghan Maroney. 8/31/2013 2:02pm. The millipede's segmented outer shell can be red, black, yellow, orange, and brown. They have anywhere from 80-400 legs and can grow to nearly 40cm long. Some species of millipede have a poisonous bite.
Habitat:
They enjoy living under rocks and in decaying logs. They are found all over the world but are more common in the southern hemisphere. So they prefer moist micro-habitats.
Notes:
I spotted this millipede out front on the sidewalk at my house in Toano, Virginia.
