Description:

Red aphids showing different stages of development, white cast off exoskeletions and black cornicles. These aphids don't get the red coloring from food, they manufacture their own carotenoids using a gene they got from fungi. http://www.sapiengames.com/2010/04/30/aphids-fungi-and-horizontal-gene-…

Habitat:

on Asteraceae leaves

Notes:

aphids reproduce parthenogenically resulting in female populations until Fall when some sexual females and males are produced. Eggs are produced that over-winter
