Field Notes

Description:

Light Brown snake with Darker brown checkerboard like pattern on body & dark brown "mask" on nose. Very tiny& thin. Maybe 4 inches long.

Habitat:

Woody area. Found in Cub Run Stream Park in Centreville, VA in early March.

Notes:

This snake was out on a cool but sunny day in mid March. Very docile. Since taking this picture, we've seen no less than 15 of these same snakes in various sizes on various locations along the same Cub Run Stream Park path in Centreville, VA. Largest one was still pretty small, maybe 10 inches long and 1 inch wide. I'd never seen one of these snakes before this picture was taken. Not as plentiful this year as last, but I have seen 2 in mid April.
