Field Notes

Description:

An attractive medium sized moth (50mm wide) mostly a deep charcoal colour with even darker wavy lines and small patches or orange-gold near the inner margin of the forewings. The depth of the black here is flattened by the camera flash making it look grey but the details of the markings are clearer.

Habitat:

Attracted to mercury vapour lamps at night at the local school.

Notes:

This is very similar to the Anthracite moth I found a year ago but that one has no orange patches. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15737028 The orange patches could be explained by loss of scales? But there is a black mark on the hind wings just above the first wave. In the other spotting the same mark is in a different position - just below the second wave. Does that makes it a different species? ...............
Going with family: GEOMETRIDAE
subfamily: Ennominae
tribe: Nacophorini
genus: Melanodes
