Field Notes

Description:

I saw this little snake under a lodge in the Amazon Rainforest in the Tambopata province of Western Peru. It posed for pictures for a little while before escaping into a hole that I was told it dug earlier.

Habitat:

Amazon Rainforest, burrows

Notes:

It looks like it mimics the coral snake, but it doesn't have stripes throughout its whole body.

Species ID Suggestions

Tschudi's false coral snake

Oxyrhopus melanogenys

Thanks for the tip! It looks like Clelia clelia but the stripes are down the body a bit. Apparently Clelia (mussarana) snakes change color as they age but I haven't found another picture that looks quite like this one. It's probably a juvenile and the adult looks different.
Sure looks like a type of Clelia snake. I am no expert. Nice spotting!
