Field Notes

Description:

A big tufted caterpillar with a spectacular walrus mustache! This is a caterpillar of one of the Banded Tussock Moths, Arctiinae, Family Erebidae.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

Notes:

The reference shows caterpillars and adult moths of Halysidota tessellaris. This may not be that species, although the caterpillars show a wide range of colors.
