They fly all the way to Mexico. We have tagged several over the years but have never gotten a retrieval notice.
Here in KY we tag in late summer as the Monarch starts their migration to Mexico. Our local naturalist from Audubon State Park uses small stamps the size of a kitchen match head and places it on the outside of the bottom wing. This stamp has a specific number that is referenced to info collected by who, where and when it was tagged. www.monarchwatch.org/tagmig/‎
