Field Notes

Description:

5 petals, ranging in color from a light lavender to pale blue or purple. Flowers in bunches, blooming in Spring (late April to early May). Leaves opposite, narrow lanceolate.

Habitat:

Shady regions of forest. Moist lowlands usually near streams.

Notes:

A common flower, phlox has many varieties, some of which are cultivated and domestic garden varieties can establish themselves well in wooded pockets of urban and suburban areas.
