Field Notes

Description:

A large moth of the Antheraea genus. This species is highly variable where there are various forms. Wingspan - 152 mm in length from tip to tip. Has a pair of feathery antennae and 3 pairs of thick furry legs. The ocelli (those fake eye spots) on it's wings are transparent. When flying, it has a habit of flying short distances and falling upside down on the ground making it resembles a dry leaf being blown by the wind.

Habitat:

Found attracted to the night lights in the hostel wall of Bombalai Jungle Lodge, Tawau Hills Park, Sabah.

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy: 5m diameter. Special thanks to Dr. Roger Kendrick for the species identification work. More of this spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/387956005 I am sure you can guess whom that guy in the video is by now. He is just trying to get the moth to cooperate with him for a facebug photo.
