Field Notes

Description:

This beautiful red and yellow flower can be anywhere from 1 to 3 feet tall. The flower heads "nod" distinctively in the breeze and brighten up any area where they grow.

Bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects enjoy visiting Columbine flowers and the nectar is a food source for hummingbirds.

Habitat:

The Canada Columbine (a.k.a the Eastern Wild Columbine) is native to Southeastern Saskatchewan, Southern Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

This Columbine usually grows in rocky woodlands or in somewhat open areas, such as along the edges of forests. It prefers partial shade and well-drained soil, but will also grow in more direct sunlight and in drier soil.

Notes:

I found this particular Columbine flower just in front of the house. It was growing in among some Wild Roses and other brush. The colour caught my eye and I had to take some photos. These are truly beautiful flowers.
