Field Notes

Description:

Family: Saturniidae, Subfamily: Saturniinae (Giant Silkworm Moths). Male. (Sexually dimorphic) Black wings with cream-colored band beyond ST line (dorsal view). Ventral view color: Dark red. Body color: red and white. Large feathery antennae. Wingspan: 7.5-9.5 cm. Does not have mouthparts. Does not eat.

Habitat:

Woodlands

Notes:

Found cocoon in woodlands during the winter and put it on a open front porch area and emerged mid-afternoon.
